Index Fresh sees peak volume of Peruvian avocados

Riverside, Calif.-based Index Fresh is seeing peak volume and quality of Peruvian avocados.

“Peru is at its peak in flavor as we enter the second half of their season,” Giovanni Cavaletto, vice president of sourcing at Index Fresh, said in a news release. “Index Fresh sources from multiple growing districts throughout Peru in order to provide customers with high-quality avocados the entire season.” Imports of avocados from Peru have been available since May, and the season will continue until September.

Good sizing and consistent quality are expected through the balance of the deal, Cavaletto said in the release.

Cavaletto said pandemic shutdowns of restaurants in March caused an immediate downturn in sales, but conditions have rebounded.

Colby Jones is the manager at Durbin Farms Market. He says things are looking good on their end, adding that they are picking their fourth or fifth variety of peaches as we head into the height of the season.

While foodservice sales were initially down 90% compared with pre-COVID levels, they are off just 30% compared with normal conditions, according to the release.

Peruvian avocado volumes will continue to grow for Index Fresh.

“We are looking forward to the new plantings from the Olmos mega-irrigation project coming into production,” Cavaletto said in the release.
