Mexican strawberry exports increased by 24.8% in the first four months of the year

Mexico exported 156,800 tons of strawberries for 662 million dollars between January and April of 2021, i.e. 16.3% more volume and 24.8% more value than in the same period of the previous year.

In 2020, Mexico was the world’s largest strawberry exporter with shipments worth 851 million dollars and it sent 99.3% of its shipments to the United States market. US imports of frozen strawberries from Mexico, the largest supplier of this product to the United States, increased by 17% since 2019.

In 2020, US imports of frozen strawberries increased by 26% over the previous year, an increase that confirms the trend seen in recent years: between 2010-12 and 2018-20, the import quota for frozen strawberries increased from 32% % to 42%.

In the last two years, Mexico’s share of the US frozen strawberry import market decreased from 79% in 2018 to approximately 60% in 2020, while Chile increased its shipments by 6% and imports from Peru grew by 40%, according to California Strawberries

The California Strawberry Commission stated that the state increased its shipments in 2020 by 4% over the previous year, while Florida increased them by 20%.

Strawberry exports from central Mexico to the United States typically occur from November to March. Meanwhile, Baja California, Mexico, makes its shipments between January and April.

Mexico’s strawberry exports compete against the strawberry from Florida and California’s Orange County and Oxnard because their marketing windows coincide.
