Mexico looks to expand avocado exports to the U.S.

Consumers love affair with avocados continue to thrive as sales continue to rise. For the four-week period ending Oct. 3, total avocado dollar sales were up 2.2 percent to $175.7 million, adding $3.8 million to the category compared with last year, according to an analysis by the Hass Avocado Board. The average avocado price per unit in the U.S. was up 16.4 percent at $1.19/unit.

With supply chains stressed there may be help on the horizon. The Mexican government is negotiating with the United States to open the export of avocado from Jalisco, a western Mexican state, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

About 80 percent of Mexico’s avocado production comes from Michoacán, a southwestern state with a production volume of more than 1.8 million tons per year. “It is very likely that soon we will deliver the good news of the export of avocado from Jalisco,” said Mexico Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development Víctor Villalobos Arámbula. “Progress is being made in negotiations with the United States government to open avocado exports from Jalisco.”
