North Bay Produce will have a robust spring and summer berry deal with good volumes and availability, says Ryan Lockman, vice president of sales and procurement for the Traverse City, Mich.-based marketer.

“North Bay has launched its new Rèserve brand concentrating on our premium blueberry and blackberry varietals, and the well-received over-the-top eating experience these berries offer consumers in the berry category,” Lockman said. “We will promote this brand along with our Michigan blueberry season throughout the summer.”

Last year, Lockman said the weather was rough in the Southeast and there were crop delays in the Pacific Northwest. Both of those issues created challenges, he said.

“So far this season, we have had the luxury of avoiding these issues,” Lockman said.

DEMAND GROWING

Berry sales have increased in recent years, and Lockman said there are several keys to the category’s growth:

– 52-week availability.

– Continued refinement and investment in genetics.

– Retail positioning.

– Better consumer price points due to the year-round availability.

“Tie that in with the continued recognition of health benefits, and you have an excellent recipe for success,” Lockman said.

He said the genetic improvement of berries is important to the future of the category.

“Genetics leads to a better consumer experience and perceived value in their purchase,” he said.

“The increase in berry consumption over the years and the new varietals having a better shelf life, texture, and flavor than in years past should help retailers sell more berries as we move into the coming years,” he continued.

PACKAGING TRENDS

Regarding packaging, Lockman said top-seal has made a light impact within the U.S. market, but it is yet to be seen if it will go mainstream.

“The reduction in plastic used is the main driving force for those that are concerned about sustainability,” he said.
