Peru exported 125,386 tons of asparagus for a value of 377.1 million dollars in 2020, which positioned the country as the largest global exporter of this vegetable and allowed it to recover the position that Mexico had snatched from it 4 years ago. This was achieved despite the context unleashed by the pandemic, in which asparagus shipments from Peru contracted by 5% in volume and 4% in value over the previous year, and which caused Mexican shipments to fall by 54% in volume and by 17% in value, according to a report by Fresh Fruit. It should be noted that, worldwide, shipments of this vegetable during 2020 fell by 12% in volume and 7% in value (410,033 tons for 1,252 million dollars).

The main market was the United States, with a 68% share (255.6 million dollars). The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, and Canada, together, had a 26% share. The Peruvian vegetable achieved its best quotation in the British market, 4.44 dollars per kilogram, and the lowest one in the United States market: 2.74 dollars per kilogram.
