CALIFORNIA & MEXICO – Information on the current strawberry market is right at your fingertips thanks to some exclusive insights from our industry friends. As demand remains strong for the coveted crop and California weather poses an impact on several produce categories, I got in touch with some strawberry savants for a closer look at the sector.

“We have finally entered spring in California, and Easter is right around the corner,” says Cindy Jewell, Vice President of Marketing for Bobalu. “However, we are still battling intermittent adverse weather, which is not normal. The good news is that days are getting longer, and we will see warmer days and nights coming our way very soon. Our strawberry volume is increasing each week, providing us with a nice long berry season ahead. We are so thankful for the customers that have stuck with us as we get through it all.”

The latest market report from The Source also noted similar challenges for the sector, with rain and cold weather creating hurdles for many central California producers and lowering yields.

While quality remains strong in the strawberry category, current market conditions have led to higher pricing.

“The start of the California strawberry harvest season hasn’t been without challenges,” explains Alan Ediger, Vice President of Sales at California Giant Berry Farms. “Unseasonably cold weather, rain, and flooding have impacted our growing regions throughout the state with delayed harvests and adjusted volumes. Despite this, the plants are healthy and are ready for the spring harvest season—which translates into the high-quality, sizable, and flavorful fruit California Giant is known for. We’re on track to deliver an abundant supply of California strawberries, with promotable volume available beginning early May.”

The Source also reported that Baja California, Mexico, has been facing similar weather challenges that have impacted yields, and Central Mexico is still producing very few numbers in a demand-exceeds-supply market.

The News in Charts is a collection of stories from the industry complemented by charts from Agronometrics to help better tell their story.
