Florida avocado shipments show growth in 2019

Overview of the Florida avocado shipments to the U.S. market, complemented by charts from Agronometrics. Original published on June 15, 2020.

Florida fresh avocado shipments were up strongly in 2019, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture shipment data.

The USDA reported that 2019 Florida avocado shipments totaled 45.76 million pounds, up from 24.82 million pounds in 2018 and 35 million pounds in 2017.

While Florida’s avocado harvest is year-round, the biggest months for volume run June through October, with peak volume in July and August.

In 2019, the percent of annual Florida avocado volume shipped in each month was:

January: 2.43%
February: less than 1%
March: less than 1%
April: less than 1%
May: less than 1%
June: 10.58%
July: 24.30%
August: 22.22%
September: 13.26%
October: 10.86%
November: 8.83%
December: 5.97%

In 2019, Florida’s Agricultural Statistics Service reported that Floria’s bearing area of avocados totaled 6,000 acres, up from 5,8000 acres in 2018 and 5,900 acres in 2017.

Value of Florida avocado production was rated at more than $8 million in 2017, the most recent year with crop value statistics available.
