Peruvian fresh blueberry exports will increase by 45% this year

Peru exported 81,000 tons of fresh blueberry between the beginning of the season, in May, and September 26, i.e. 45% more than the 56,000 tons it shipped in the same period of 2020, according to data from the Inform@cción consultancy.
According to Fernando Cilloniz Benavides, the president of the consultancy, Peru exported 49,586,465 kilos of fresh blueberries in the 26 first days of September and it is expected to end the month with 55,000,000 kilos exported. In September of 2020, the country exported 34,631,428 kilos of fresh blueberries.
The campaign will peak in October, so the sector expects it will ship a much higher volume than the 47,626,142 kilos it exported in October 2020.

“We shipped more fresh blueberries in September of 2021 than in October of 2020, which is the month with the highest shipments. I have no doubts that in October 2021 exports will be much higher,” he stated.
According to Cilloniz, they initially thought the country would export 30% more fresh blueberries in the 2021/2022 campaign than in the 2020/2021 campaign when the country exported 162,459 tons. However, they now estimate the increase would be above 40%.
The main destination markets for the Peruvian fresh blueberries would be the United States, Europe, and China.
The president of Inform@cción also highlighted the increase in blueberry areas in Peru. In this regard, he said that the largest number of hectares are in La Libertad (Chavimochic), but that there are also several hectares of this crop in Lambayeque (Olmos), Ica, Arequipa, and Moquegua.
